By the Numbers: February 2024

When your membership year runs August 1st thru July 31st, February is the perfect time to look at trends regarding our members…

Types of Multiples: right now, things are fairly equal in the group whether a set of twins is boy/boy, boy/girl, or girl/girl. We only have one set of triplets at the moment, and have no families at present who have quads or higher. We also have members currently expecting and don’t know the genders yet, which is always exciting!

Ages of Multiples: we did experience a decrease in members who have teenage and adult twins since last year, but our number of members with multiples ages 7-10 hasn’t been this high in ten years, if ever! We also have a boom of members with 2-year-old twins, but otherwise it’s a pretty even split of members with infants, members with 1-year-olds, members with preschoolers, and members with kindergarteners. We have been adjusting our programming accordingly to appeal to all age ranges, which has been fun!

Locations of Members: We experienced a little “condensing” this year in terms of our geographic spread. While “Space Coast” is a nickname for our 72-mile-long county, we do not have very many members living near the north and south boundaries; 58% of our members live between West Melbourne and Rockledge. We also previously enjoyed having members who moved away to states like Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Colorado remain members, but they have since moved on to other adventures. We have just over a quarter of our members living on the barrier islands east of the mainland (down from about a third last year).

Length of Membership: Last May, we celebrated 40 years of supporting families with multiple-birth children in Brevard County. Our longest-standing member joined in 1992 and still participates in the group, as does a 1997 member. We continue to have vibrant growth, however, as over a third of our members joined in the past twelve months (up from a three-year streak of 25% new members).

More than Multiples: The more, the merrier! Over half of our members have other children in addition to their multiples, with most having older children. Interestingly, NONE of our members have singletons both older AND younger than their multiples. We also have one family currently who has two sets of multiples, plus another older child.

As you can see, there’s a little bit of everything in our group. If you’re just hearing about Space Coast Mothers of Multiples for the first time, now is a great time to reach out – we have a Spring full of all kinds of activities to enjoy, and our membership rate is pro-rated now that half the term is up.
